About this tool

Type or paste and the counts update live: words, characters both with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, average word length, and an estimated reading and speaking time. A frequency list shows which words you lean on, with the commonest English function words held back so the list is not just "the" and "of".

Two counting rules are worth stating, because every counter decides them differently and almost none of them say so. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so an emoji is one character — JavaScript's own string length reports two for most emoji, which is why so many online counters silently double them. And a hyphenated compound counts as one word, matching what word processors report, since that is the number people are usually checking against.

Sentence detection is a heuristic and is labelled as one: it ignores decimal points and domain names so "3.14" and "example.com" do not split a sentence, but an abbreviation such as "Dr." will still end one early. The reading-ease score is Flesch, which needs a syllable count, and English syllable counting by rule is approximate — so it is shown as a band rather than a false decimal.

Nothing is uploaded. That matters for the obvious use: the text being counted is usually a draft, an essay or a client document, and there is no reason for any of it to reach a server to be counted.
